We understand the job’s impact on your health
As a union worker, you face many workplace health risks.
Three types of injuries may appear in a Union workplace: acute, repetitive strain, and constant strain.
Types of acute injuries include, but are not limited to:
- Slip and fall
- Dog bites
- Motor vehicle accidents
Acute injuries may result in nerve damage with chronic debilitating pain affecting both workplace capabilities and home life.
Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
Repetitive strain injuries are the result of the same motion being done over and over without activity that counters the muscle use, such as rest or differing the action. If you work in a Union workplace, you may experience RSIs in your wrists, shoulders, elbows and back.
RSIs and the accompanying pain and swelling may, if unacknowledged or untreated, result in permanent damage that requires work absences and may interfere with daily life.
Constant strain injuries (CSI)
Constant strain injuries often take people by surprise as they are built up over time. CSIs may result from standing for long periods on concrete floors, carrying heavy objects walking long distances without cushioning. Common CSIs that may affect you include shoulder, back, hip and knee injuries.
CSIs are often not acknowledged until the damage has become severe. CSIs may include damage to nerves, ligaments, tendons, muscles and even bone. The pain resulting from untreated or severe CSIs can impede work and home life activities.
Stress in the workplace may result in mental health issues that affect your daily life and effectiveness in the workplace. Stress can be felt for lots of reasons but high stress situations contribute to health issues. Workplace situations that may contribute include, but aren’t limited to:
- Uncertainty in the job
- Feelings of lack of control
- Feelings of isolation
Mental health challenges in the workplace can cause anxiety, sleeping problems, suicidal thoughts and even physical pain.
