The Risky Barbecue
By Patrick Wood, Kinesiologist
Summer’s finally here which means my family is readying themselves to host the Annual Backyard Barbecue. There’s a lot of work to finish before we have our guests arrive and my mission is to make sure everyone is safe. Each year someone goes and injures themselves in an avoidable way but not this year. This year I’m on the lookout!
Almost immediately I need to stop my sister. She’s trying to pick up the cooler full of ice and drinks, but her technique is all wrong! By bending at the waist and reaching out in front of herself like that she is going to throw out her back. I rush over to help and explain proper technique. Stepping in close to the cooler I bend down into a squat while trying to keep my back straight. Next, I lift with my legs and easily place the cooler on its stand. One injury avoided and a lesson learned, hopefully she will lift properly for the rest of the day.
As I’m walking down the deck, I see my dad struggling with some patio furniture and a screwdriver. He’s usually pretty good with his tools but every time he finishes with a screwdriver he complains of pain in his forearm. Even as I watch he’s rubbing his arm and trying to shake it out. These are classic indications that he’s suffering from tendonitis in his elbow which is common with excessive twisting. I suggest he should stretch the arm out by holding the affected arm out in front of himself with the fingers pointed to the ground. With his other hand I instruct him to pull his fingers toward his elbow until he feels it stretching. After my dad held it for 20 seconds, he looked at me in astonishment since it already felt a bit better!
Finally, everything’s set up and everyone’s enjoying themselves. I can sit back and relax for a little bit before starting to clean up. But what’s this? My little cousin is limping over to me crying. He twisted his ankle while playing soccer and now it’s starting to swell. Quickly I grab some ice and tell him to hold it against his ankle. I told him that he may need to see someone for it and there is no better place than Our Clinic.
In fact, Our Clinic would be able to help my sister, who ignored my advice and is now holding her back in pain, and my dad who keeps trying to massage his arm. Our Clinic had an integrated team of healthcare practitioners that put our health first. From physiotherapy to massage, their team is here to make sure you enjoy your summer to the fullest!
