Defuse stress and anxiety - alternatives
Antidepressants are the most widely prescribed medication to deal with anxiety and stress disorders. But they’re no longer the only choice.
SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, also known as serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitors) have been used for a variety of major depressive disorders over the years. When combined with narrative and cognitive behaviour therapy, wellness has been achieved for a vast number of people.
In addition to SSRIs in the arsenal to treat depression, evidence supporting the use of medical cannabis for anxiety and stress is increasing. Evidence suggests the medicinal properties of the cannabidiol (CBD) in marijuana far outweigh those of the psychoactive ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
CBD is non-psychoactive and isn’t typically ingested to attain any sort of ‘high’. This lack of the psychological euphoria associated with THC allows patients to use CBD without drowsiness, confusion, memory issues or any of the behaviours often associated with being high.
The human body has built-in cannabinoid receptors and natural cannabinoids that regulate mood, appetite, memory and pain sensibility. So CBD is not as foreign to the body as some people think.
Unlike SSRIs, CBD provides fast-acting anxiety relief; it’s almost instantaneous. It doesn’t require weeks or months of ingestion to offer relief as can be the case with some SSRIs. Research has suggested CBD not only gives relief in anxiety or stress disorders but may enhance mood, reduce inflammation, improve sleep quality and preserve healthy brain function.
CBD is something to consider, in combination with narrative and cognitive behaviour therapy, if you have stress or anxiety disorders but don’t benefit from or prefer not to take SSRIs. Although not all doctors in Canada are willing to prescribe medical cannabis, it is legal in Canada and you can safely have the discussion with your doctor.
